TREASURES NEW AND OLD
As traditional models of religious life and ministry give way to emerging ones, we have to respond creatively, drawing on the best of the old with an openness to the best in the new. The Emmaus monastic community is by no means the only way, or even the best way to do this. But it is one way; and one that draws on the best of the “undivided church of the past”, while seeking to draw out the best in the emerging “undivided church of the future”.
The Emmaus monastic community includes elements of communal, apostolic and solitary life.
The purpose of each is to give expression to different aspects of the one contemplative life.
“Seek God, and God alone.
Let this be your deepest desire: to love God;
to find all that is, and love all that is, in God:
the God who knows you better than you know yourself;
who is closer to you than you are to yourself,
and who loves you absolutely, just as you are;
who desires nothing other than that you should flourish:
that all should come alive and live fully, eternally, in God.
This is the good news that Jesus proclaimed and embodied;
it is the spark of the fire he ignites;
the kingdom of God he proclaimed,
the eternal life he offered,
which is always already given,
always already here.
It is his own Spirit in the world,
his very self,
his divine being,
animating all beings,
poured into your being,
transforming all being,
uniting all in God:
God alone.” (from our Rule, "The Primacy of Love")
